The Peck Bird Information Manager integrates photographs (1300), recordings (2.5 hours), etymology (700 entries), checklists, identification tips and species assessment data into four visually simple but highly integrated lists.

    • The AOU list, defined by the AOU (American Ornithologists¿ Union), is a hierarchical classification of the species that occur in North America.
    • The document list, defined by the PWRC (Patuxent Wildlife Research Center), is approximately the list of species that breed in North America.
    • The audio list displays the recordings available.
    • The BCR list, defined by the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, is the list of bird conservation regions covering Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

There are two components to the Peck Bird Information Manager.

    • The Peck application is a compilation of databases and the executable code to manipulate them (e.g., show a slide show of in-flight birds of prey currently in your region).
    • The Peck multimedia, typically stored on an SD card, is a compilation of recordings, photographs and etymology. The multimedia comes in a Public Domain and a proprietary version. The Public Domain multimedia is a free sample. The proprietary multimedia has more photographs and recordings, as well as the etymology for the names of 736 species.

    Updated Description:

This is terrific. I've only just begun to learn how to use this tool, but already I'm crazy about it. Sitting in my yard, playing bird sounds ... and the pictures. I can't wait to get it out in the field. I can search for a bird, listen to its call, see the picture ... and maybe even tell if that's the bird sitting up in a tree in front of me. Being able to generate reports will come in handy too, particularly when I'm on a trip with my birding group -- we keep track of those things. In short, I love this app. I knew I would before I installed it, and having done so, it's even better than I imagined.
